Exhibition
Peter Behrens
From Jugendstil to Industrial Design

The exhibition presents the oeuvre of Peter Behrens in its entirety. In addition to his first works as a painter and exceptional contributions to the architecture of the Modern Era, his work as a designer and pioneering industrial designer is presented based on a number of items on loan from public and private collections.

The exhibition is specially designed to highlight the impressive and multifaceted work of Peter Behrens effectively. Using contrasting black and white surfaces, pedestals and a special lettering concept, an abstract space is created that integrates the exhibits into the additive spatial structure of the Kunsthalle. Black walls visually lead one through the exhibition spaces. Groups of objects, such as glasses, porcelain, vases and pitchers, but also books, textiles, graphic work, and pieces of furniture are presented on white cubes grouped thematically on black pedestals. The exhibition graphics in the font ‘Behrens Antiqua’, another creation of the all-round artist, make an additional connection between the space, work and Behrens himself. Most importantly, the clear and reserved presentation in black and white opens the eye of the visitor for the richness in detail that characterizes his work.
