Karl Marx’s Capital was first published 150 years ago in Hamburg. For the anniversary, the Museum der Arbeit presents a controversial exhibition addressing the book’s historical background and its implications for contemporary society. A sequence of vivid rooms presents the writing, publishing, interpreting, reading and discussion of Capital, a book which has proven a difficult read and provoked widely varied interpretations. Quotes and statements illustrate the relevant questions raised by Capital, and visitors’ perspectives and reactions are continuously integrated into the exhibition. The image of the world as a product in a supermarket is the starting point for a journey through time, beliefs, and terminology. Visually, the tour oscillates between pop art, storehouses and historical Hamburg.
The exhibition is shown from September 6, 2017 to March, 4 2018.
